Telling Your Child About Dyslexia

There is an old saying – “It’s no disgrace to be poor, but it’s mighty inconvenient.”
The same could be said of dyslexia. It is nothing to be ashamed of, but it does complicate life. While there is no doubt that many people with dyslexia have special gifts, and some of the common traits of dyslexia can be very useful, nevertheless in a world where literacy is important, dyslexia ia a definite inconvenience. There is no denying that – but it is not the end of the world either. It is very important for your child that you find a balance when dealing with the subject … READ MORE

CORK

Cork Public Museum & Fitzgeralds Park

Cork Public Museum is housed in a two storey Georgian house commanding a central position in Fitzgerald Park, Cork. Originally built in 1845 by the Beamish family, the building, then known as “The Shrubberies” was their family home for decades. The property and surrounding land was eventually purchased by Cork Corporation for the purpose of housing the Cork International Exhibition of 1902 and 1903. The site of the exhibition was opened as Public Park in 1906. A site of some 18 acres of landscaped gardens; the park is a magnificent setting for the museum. Flanked by U.C.C. on one side and the riverside gardens of Sunday’s Well on the other, the park bestows a sense of history that complements the ambience of the museum perfectly.

The Riverview Café, recently opened in the museum’s extension, fully exploits the commanding views of the river Lee and provides the visitor with a tranquil haven to enjoy a coffee and a snack.

How to protect your children from pornography

Evidence suggests that children as young as 11 may be viewing adult pornography websites.
Therese McKenna (The Weekend Magazine, Irish Independent) did a really interesting article published last Saturday on what children are accessing online and the effect it can have on them.
Trish Murphy, Psychotherapist,  has found recently that there are a growing number of young…Read More

Postnatal Depression

Having a baby is a major event in any woman’s life and this is particularly so in the case of a first baby. Motherhood is an exciting and wonderful experience. Baby books and magazines expound at length about the joys of parenthood. This booklet is designed to explain both the normal and abnormal emotional responses which may follow on the birth of a new baby.

Emotional distress following delivery ranges from the very common, mild and short lived ‘baby blues’, through postnatal depression, to the more serious but rare condition, Puerperal Psychosis. Happily the vast majority of women, 85% of them, succeed in getting through pregnancy, childbirth and the year that follows, without any major psychological difficulties. Remember, if you have postnatal depression, do not despair, it is treatable and you will make a full recovery.

Defining ‘Daddy

It seems that the definition of “father hood” has changed a lot over the years, while the definition of being a mum doesn’t seem to have changed all that much. What does it mean to be a father these days?

To fully integrate the idea of being a father into your self-identity, it’ll help to understand exactly what being a father actually involves. One of the most consistent findings by researchers is that new fathers almost always feel unprepared for their new role. Personally, I would have been surprised if it were otherwise. As writer David L. Giveans says, “It is both unfair and realistic to expect a man . . . to automatically ‘father’ when his life experiences have skillfully isolated him from learning how.”  READ MORE

Vikings !

If you haven’t taken the kids to the new Viking exhibition at Dublinia yet make a point of going to this fun filled, interesting and educational tour the kids will love.  We took our 4 along last Sunday to see what they made of it.
There’s lots of interactive bits for them to get involved with and its full of interesting facts about how the Vikings came to be in Ireland and how they lived, what they ate and how they dressed.

Every now and again a ‘real’ Viking would appear and speak to the kids about the role they played eg. A lady appear in traditional dress and explained she made the cloth she was wearing into clothes.
The exhibition is set out like scenes in a play.  You can wander around the Viking house or hut and then into the Merchants house.  You can read about what they ate, what work they did and what diseases were around then.  Did you know the life expectancy of a male then was only 30!

My 7 and 5 year olds in particular enjoyed our visit and the 3 year old enjoyed the horned Viking hats in the shop afterwards.

For more information on the exhibition visit here.  Its well worth a trip.
