With some much information readily available from books and websites expectant parents may wonder if it is worthwhile attending a childbirth class and what types of classes are available.
Why attend an Antenatal Class?
Childbirth classes are designed to help you to understand late pregnancy and what to expect and what is happening to your body during labour and birth. If you understand what is happening and have coping strategies, you’ll feel more in control. Classes also help to prepare you for the postnatal period and introduce you to caring for your baby and give you information on feeding, bathing allowing you to ask any questions you need to.
We at Tots2Teens run monthly One Day Antenatal Classes in Dublin and Cork. The class is on a Saturday and is an alternative to the hospital run classes over the course of a number of weeks which may not suit everyone’s schedules. Our class is run by an experienced midwife and while educational and informative it is also relaxed and engaging. We encourage participation and ensure everyone feels comfortable asking questions. We find generally that the questions are generally the same, most expectant parents have the same concerns, in general you will have the Mums to Be interested in coping strategies and pain relief options and the Dads to Be enquiring as to when exactly to make that dash for the hospital!
Apart from our Antenatal classes there are also many other options including:
GentleBirth
GentleBirth is a 5 week homestudy program including 3 CDs and a 170 page program guide. It is a comprehensive easy to follow course that takes you step by step, week by week through simple self hypnosis and sports psychology techniques and exercises to prepare for your best birth.

Hypnobirthing
HypnoBirthing® is as much a philosophy of birth as it is a technique for achieving a satisfying, relaxing, and stress-free method of birthing.

What’s most important is that you research the options and make as decision as to what course you think would suit you best. Read about the classes and visit the websites provided. Talk to parents who have attended the classes before you make your choice.
If you are prepared and understand the process and what is happening to your body you will be able to relax more and embrace the miracle of childbirth.
